### Tasks **Inside the Role** The Manufacturing Controls Engineer III serves as a technical leader responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and support of manufacturing controls systems across machining, assembly, and production testing operations. This role leads complex automation projects, supports new product launches, drives continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborates with global engineering teams to implement innovative manufacturing technologies that improve safety, quality, productivity, and operational performance. **Posting Information** We provide a scheduled posting end date to assist our candidates with their application planning. This includes researching vendors, creating technical specifications, requesting quotations, selecting vendors, creating timelines, issuing purchase requisitions, scheduling installations and tryouts, qualifying and approving equipment/tooling for projects, etc. - Lead the controls portion of an internal or external project. - Ensure engineering practices comply with government regulations and safety standards. - Implement and support hardware and software for PLC, CNC, HMI, and Engine controls. - Implement and support device-level networks. - Implement and support servo and VFD hardware and software. - Implement and support manufacturing monitoring systems with emphasis on interfacing to higher-level systems. - Independently apply processes and standards to the needs and progress of projects. - Plan, fund, and track complex, overarching projects based on Daimler standard project funding principles (CAPEX, NRE, EA1, EA2, and OP) as needed. - Proactively manage and adopt spending plans to meet cost targets. - Identify shortfalls in projects or tasks and independently develop countermeasures, resolutions, and implement effectiveness. - Utilize appropriate project management tools for projects or tasks. - Lead project teams with production, maintenance, product engineering, quality, suppliers, etc. - Promote continuous improvements and actively screen markets to implement innovations. - Schedule time according to established job priorities. Monitor work progress and resolve problems to ensure timely completion of projects. - Effectively work with hourly and skilled trades union workers. - Provide management with regular reports or presentations on project work plans and status for information and resource management purposes. - Professionally represent ME and actively participate in CVDS and PPR projects. - Regularly communicate and collaborate with the global ME team. - Coach, mentor, and delegate tasks to other team members. - Apply controls technology to new and existing processes to provide optimal manufacturing solutions. - Specify, manage, and assist with control designs for new manufacturing equipment procurement. - Provide technical assistance and support to manufacturing operations. - Participate in design reviews with suppliers to develop and implement the best overall equipment design. **Core Functions** - Conduct equipment controls hardware and software design reviews with suppliers. - Review engine module control changes and the impacts to new or existing lines, making adjustments as needed. - Support controls topics in assembly, machining, and production test cells. - Monitor equipment build and installation to verify correct implementation. - Support the controls portion of a production line startup, including the tracking and verification of open controls issues. - Engineer and implement controls hardware and software changes required for process change requests on existing lines. - Research and develop standards for new controls technologies. **Knowledge You Should Bring** - Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering. - Minimum of 7 years of experience in controls engineering. - At least 5 years of PLC programming experience, specifically Siemens, and HMI development, such as HMI PRO, WinCC Flex, and TIA Portal. - Minimum 5 years of experience with Siemens controls. - Experience in manufacturing machining and assembly controls equipment hardware and software design practices and standards. - At least 5 years of experience in MES systems, such as SISAM. - At least 5 years of experience in FIS systems, such as PRISMA. - At least 5 years of experience using PC hardware and Microsoft Windows in a networked plant floor environment. - Experience in a project lead role. - Ability to travel, including internationally (approximately 10%). - Proficiency in articulating technical information in written and oral communication. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office. - Ability to oversee activities of tradesmen and contractors. - Ability to provide technical support to Operations, Maintenance, and other functional groups on request. **Exceptional Candidates Might Have** - Project management or supervisory experience. - Global project experience. - Ability to identify basic problems and procedural irregularities, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. - Experience with new product launches or machine retrofits. - Ability to organize shop floor management meetings. - AutoCAD experience with controls-related drawings. **Where We Work** This position is open to applicants who can work in (or relocate to) Detroit, MI, US.
